  • Things are beginning to lighten up in the merger world, specifically for those two communication companies, AT&T and T-Mobile. The TIA is made up of some of the larger names in the tech industry such as Apple, Nokia, Intel, and Microsoft. TIA’s President Grant Seiffert said the following about the merger: “Combining the infrastructure and resources of AT&T and T-Mobile would help create a reliable, high-speed mobile broadband network and encourage a virtuous cycle of investment and innovation in America’s business sector, meet growing consumer demand for these services, and address the looming spectrum crisis. The potential benefits of the merger should be given substantial weight in the FCC’s review...

  • Here we go again, sadly. The FCC has come out today and announced in a statement that Wireless Bureau chief Rick Kaplan plans to stop the 180 day review time on AT&T’s proposed purchase of Qualcomm’s 700MHz spectrum. This doesn’t mean the end of the deal, but this does have a great deal to do with the planned merger, as it “overlaps” some of AT&T’s plans. Qualcomm’s VP of Government Affairs, Dean Brenner reached out to Engadget with an official statement: “The FCC should approve the pending AT&T-Qualcomm spectrum sale now because of the clear benefits to the public from the sale that stand on their own and are totally unrelated to...

  • Bad news for any pro-AT&T users like myself, or AT&T themselves, the Chair of the US Senate’s Anti-trust Subcommittee (Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis.)  is seeking to block the AT&T  - T-Mobile merger. He had this to say: ”I have concluded that this acquisition, if permitted to proceed, would likely cause substantial harm to competition and consumers, would be contrary to antitrust law and not in the public interest, and therefore should be blocked by your agencies.” Top Democrats of the house also agreed, stating the following: “We believe that AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile would be a troubling backward step in federal public policy–a retrenchment from nearly two decades of promoting competition and...

  • So far, Apple has been having a hell of a time in the courthouse, and I might say, this is a good thing for them. However, this is bad for HTC, clearly. The ITC has ruled that 2 of the 10 patents Apple accused HTC of infringing on in Apple’s favor; in other words, HTC was found guilty. If everything plays well for Apple, we can expect particular devices manufactured by the Taiwanese company to be banned from reaching US shores. Good for Apple favoritism, bad for those who love HTC. HTC general counsel Grace Lei responded back quickly with the following statement: “HTC will vigorously fight these two remaining patents through an appeal...

  • Yay! All you Apple lovers may now rejoice. In just the last week we’ve seen many things hinting this, from boxes lined up in a row to a delivery, but now it is official: the white iPhone will come to market tomorrow, April 28, of 2011. The phone will be available in 3G on both Verizon and AT&T in the US, and other standard carriers around the world. In a review on AllThingD, Phil Schiller of Apple talked about the delay. Many would have thought it was becuase of manufacturing issue – not true. It has to do with what many sites are calling a technology sunblock. UV rays were...

  • Verizon, the United States’ largest cellular provider has now been found to also be the largest preffered network for iPad 2 3G users. Of course, if we look at the history of both companies, AT&T does have a worse go-around than Verizon, specifically applying to the coverage (hell of a lot better) and customer service (likely better, according to many reports). On the flip-side though, AT&T does have considerably faster data speeds, so if AT&T has respectable coverage in your area it would make sense. ~ Jake Root Apple Correspondent Via: Macrumors

  • Call me surprised. Actually don’t, you’d be a fool. A survey by ChangeWave Research has revealed that AT&T drops the most calls of any mobile network, at 4.6 calls per 100 (4.6%). Verizon unsurprisingly takes the lead in this survey with only 1.4 dropped calls per 100 (1.4%). T-Mobile is second at 2.3% and Sprint is third at 2.7%. AT&T reached out and said that a survey by GWS not so very long ago revealed a 98.6% success rate, or exactly the same as Verizon’s. Hopefully, AT&T’s upcoming LTE and current HSPA+ network’s will help that number drop more. Best of luck to you, because you will need it. ~ Jake Root Yes,...

  • Despite the fact I follow technology news quite vigorously, I did not see this coming at all. AT&T has announced today that they will be purchasing the US’s secondary GSM carrier from Deutsche-Telekom (based in Europe). The companies say it will take about 12 months for the entire thing to go through, if it even does at all. There are quite the number of regulatory hurdles they have to go over. When it’s all said and done though, goodbye T-Mobile USA, it will just be AT&T. Only one GSM carrier for the entire country. Win-win situation? Over-all, it will cost $39 billion (cash and stock). Because the networks are both...

How exactly they know is beyond our comprehension, but they seem to be targeting the right users, ones with the software installed. If you are one of the lucky, or rather unlucky peers who do use free tethering, AT&T is going to force you to stop by making you pay for the service. They will automatically add a tethering plan onto your current plan at $45 dollars a month, a DataPro 4GB. If you are a grandfather user like myself and...

  • Call me not surprised, maybe even a bit of a pessimist, but there will be no LTE for the iPad 2. If we all know Apple (which we all do), then we knew this would happen. It was practically a given. Verizon launched their website advertising the tablet today, with no mention of LTE. As for AT&T? Of course not. It is a possibility that the iPad may be upgraded in September (a small upgrade but not iOS) that will include some sort of 4G support. Or that is the rumor spreading around.
