First Look: Samsung Series 5. Chrome OS in a little black dress.

Ok, so its not actually in a little black dress, but close enough. Today at Google IO (Day 2), Google announced it’s first OEM partners for Chromebooks. A quick recap of Chrome OS. Chrome OS is a light weight OS that lives on your device, but the cloud handels everything. It is based around the very popular Chrome web browser and uses Google servers and all the web apps out there to get work done. This allows companies to make very sleek, low cost, and ultra efficient machines. The Samsung Series 5 is the perfect example of what the future has in store for us. So lets take a look, shall we?

So just what can you fit in that 0.73 Inch, 3.23 pound chasis? How about a 1.66GHz Dual Core Intel processor, 16GB of solid state memory, 1MP web cam, two USB 2.o ports, video out through an adapter (included), an SDXC card reader, as well as 8.5 hours of battery life. All this takes place in a very nice 12.1 inch (1280×800 res display) form factor. Now I know what you’re thinking, “only 16GB, where do I keep everything?” Simple, the cloud! The 16GB of internal memory is for Chrome OS and storing information for use when off line. Though its rare that you will ever be offline when you have a Chromebook. The Series 5 has 802.11 b/g/n WiFi as well as a global 3G chip, which Verizon graciously gives you 100MB’s of data a month, for free. Yes, I said free. So what is this going to run you? Not all that much. Samsung has taken up a very agressive pricing model. If you know you are always going to be on WiFi or have a 3G Hotspot that you use often, the you can pick up a WiFi only model of the Series 5 for just $429. If you know that your are going to be doing a lot of travel, and might now always have WiFi for a mobile hotspot on you, then you are going to want to take a  look at the WiFi+3G Series 5. Priced at $499, its an excellent choice for business men and women and frequent travelers.

In review. The Samsung Series 5 is one of the sleekest computers I’ve ever seen. If you like the Samsung Series 9, then you will love the Series 5. With a full day of work on one charge, you can walk out of the house, go to the office, and head over to the local coffee shop, and get all your work on a sleek, light, and quick computer. With peace of mind know that if you loose your Series 5, all of your work is stored in the cloud, accessible from any computer. All you have to do is log in. You are defiantly going to want to hop on to Amazon or drive over to Best Buy on June 15 to pick one of these up, and join the future of mobile computing. In either Titan Silver or Arctic White..
